H CARVED WITH LOVE, VIRGINIA
At age 16, Harold and Susan, carved their initials 4 feet above the ground
in the bark of a 15-foot-tall tree. Thirty years later they returned to
the tree, which was by then 40 feet tall, and to their surprise saw that
their initials, now beautifully sculpted, were still only 4 feet above the
ground. Increasing height occurs only from terminal tips.
Carving in bark interferes with the flow of water in the
xylem, so trees have to compensate by growing extra roots to take in more
water. Advice to lovers: "If you want to protect the tree, carve vertically,
rather than horizontally!" |
