4 SCALLOP SHELL, CARIBBEAN
The pale, yellow-white variable design on this red shell gave us nature's
own "4". Scallops have evolved rows of simple, blue eyes displayed along
the mantle edges on each valve - similar to a string of Christmas lights.
Sensing when a predator, the sea star, touches it, the scallop escapes by
rapidly flapping its valves together and jet propelling away to safety.
Such scenes were filmed at the Bermuda Biological station by the
Smithsonian's Dr.Thomas Waller and Kjell.
