S FLAMINGO, AFRICA
Kjell photographed this long necked animated “S” at Kenya’s Lake Nakuru where more than a million flamingos may congregate. When feeding, the flamingo dips its abruptly turned-down bill upside down in the water and weaves its bill from side to side. With its thick tongue it forces muddy water out through the serrated edges of its bill, thereby trapping tiny edible mollusks, crustaceans and algae.
