B STRANGLER VINE WITH ANTS, THAILAND
Seeds of strangler figs are eaten and deposited by birds and sprout only
in humid, mossy areas, normally on tree branches. The seedling has no need
to grow upwards; it simply lets its dangling roots absorb water and
nutrients. Gradually it envelops the host tree, preventing it from
expanding and starves it to death. Birds eat the seeds of the strangler
fig and void them in new mossy areas for saplings to grow and to plot
murder all over again.
In the rainforest, and many other parts of the world,
ants are seen crawling everywhere looking for food. With their combined
weight greater than the combined weight of all humans, they are the most
numerous type of animal in the world.
